Vibrant, charming, and with conviction
PROVINZLÄRM, a concert series and festival for new music in Eckernförde – has been dedicating itself to the new and the unknown in music, shaping the musical present in the far north for almost 25 years.
In 2002, the concert series Neue Musik Eckernförde was founded by flutist Beatrix Wagner and composer Gerald Eckert; in 2007, the biennial "Provinzlärm Festival" was added. They were supported by the then Eckernförde cultural representative Sven Wlassack, as well as by the cantor at St. Nicolai, Katja Kanowski, and the pastor at St. Nicolai, Dirk Homrighausen.
Since 2003, the usually five concerts per year, as well as the concerts of the festival biennial, have taken place in the acoustically and atmospherically distinctive space of St. Nicolai Church Eckernförde.
Additional concert venues include the Schleswig-Holstein Artists' House "Otte 1" and, since 2026, the Kapelle am Mühlenberg.

In mostly moderated concerts, Provinzlärm presents to its audience – consisting of connoisseurs, newcomers, and young listeners alike – new, current, and experimental music by both young and established composers, both in its concert series and festival.
It is a place for world premieres, while its programs also repeatedly connect New Music with Early Music – and the avant-garde with the tradition from which it emerges. The great joy of experimentation and the enthusiasm for an intense engagement with the present is reflected in concerts where the audience can experience "live and in color" the creation of sounds, the application of new playing techniques, or unknown instruments – directly and up close.
Performances of the highest level are ensured by the Ensemble in Residence "Reflexion K", which invites not only national and international musicians and composers to its projects, but also artists from other disciplines – combining and merging new instrumental music with electronics, dance, performance, and light installations.
Regular collaborations take place with the Schleswig-Holstein Artists' House Eckernförde "Otte 1" and its artists in residence, as well as with the Musikhochschule Lübeck and its students.
